Cookie Policy
Cookies and similar browser storage keep the site working and, with your permission, help us understand which episodes land. This is the complete list, what each item does, and how to change your mind at any time.

1. What these technologies are
A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser. We also use local storage, which works similarly but stays on your device instead of being sent with every request. In this policy “cookies” means both, plus any comparable technology such as pixels used by embedded players. We operate from Los Angeles, California, United States; this policy applies to every visitor.
2. Categories we use
Strictly necessary cookies are required for the site and sign-in to function; they are always on and cannot be switched off here. Functional storage remembers your quiz progress on your own device. Analytics storage measures usage in aggregate so we can improve the content. Marketing / embeds covers YouTube players and social sharing. The last two are set only after you consent, and no analytics or embed storage is written before you choose.
3. Full inventory
| Name | Category | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| gwc-cookie-consent | Strictly necessary | Guess What Country (first party) | Records which cookie categories you accepted so we do not ask again. | 12 months (local storage) |
| gwc-theme | Strictly necessary | Guess What Country (first party) | Stores the colour theme you picked so the site loads without a flash of the wrong theme. | Until you clear it (local storage) |
| sb-*-auth-token | Strictly necessary | Authentication platform (first party storage) | Keeps team members signed in to the admin portal and protects the session against reuse. | Session, refreshed until sign-out |
| gwc-quiz-* | Functional | Guess What Country (first party) | Holds your quiz progress, streak and revealed clues on your device only; never sent to us. | Until you clear it (local storage) |
| Aggregated analytics events | Analytics (consent required) | Guess What Country (first party) | Counts page and episode views and quiz completions so we can improve the content. | Up to 26 months, aggregated |
| VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE, YSC, PREF and similar | Marketing / embeds (consent required) | Google LLC via youtube-nocookie.com | Set when a YouTube embed loads or plays, for playback preferences, bandwidth and measurement. | Session up to 24 months, set by Google |
We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site trackers or data brokers, and none of this storage is used to sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
4. Managing your choices
You can change or withdraw consent at any time, and withdrawing is as easy as giving it. Rejecting non-essential cookies stops analytics storage and prevents YouTube embeds from loading until you change your mind — you can still open any episode directly on YouTube.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. We honor the Global Privacy Control signal and browser “Do Not Track” headers as a rejection of all non-essential storage, as required for California residents. Blocking strictly necessary storage will break sign-in to the team portal.
5. More information
What we do with the resulting data, how long we keep it and your California rights are set out in our Privacy Policy. Cookie questions and consent-related requests go to privacy@guesswhatcountry.com. We review this inventory whenever the site changes and at least once a year.
